There are bed spaces available for people requiring support, as well as job opportunities.

A specialist nursing home helping people recover from acquired brain injuries to return to their own families has availability throughout Northamptonshire.

The Oakleaf Group runs a number of homes in the area, specialising in rehabilitation after strokes, traumatic brain injury and other neurological conditions. In addition they offer long term and palliative care and step down community placements.

Treating people from the age of 18 onwards – with some clients into their 90s – the results are often transformative.

Kathy Swannell, Clinical and operations director, said: “We fully believe that people should have access to rehabilitation as well as excellent care, and our specialist support workers and medical staff work tirelessly for our clients.

“In fact, 96 per cent of people who come to use for post-stroke rehabilitation are able to successfully return home to their families, and we are very proud of that rate.”

Specialist care homes

The Oakleaf Care Group runs homes in Hartwell (Cunningham House, Orchard House, Hilltop House and Lodge), Duston (Cotswolds House), All Hallows Neuro Rehab Centre in Suffolk and Community Placements in Weston Favell and East Hunsbury. They have been offering neurorehabilition over a number of years, and it is now one of the leading providers in this highly specialist field.

The care and therapy provided aims to improve skills, quality of life and wellbeing, helping people recover or adapt to life-changing conditions.

Sometimes this intervention happens very soon after the acquired brain injury, at other times months or even many years later.

Each of the services offers something different, both in terms of facilities and services offered, but also the level of care required and the pathways for service users.

They also offer step down community placements which concentrate on the building on skills required for their next move to more independent living.

Many of the spaces in The Oakleaf Group care homes are NHS funded.

Recruiting more support workers

The Oakleaf Group constantly strives to improve and expand its workforce, but sadly saw a number of people leave the profession after the pandemic, and said it recognised this was a challenging profession at times, but also one which could be extremely gratifying.

Kathy added: “We would be delighted to welcome people back into care work, their experience and expertise is such an advantage in the role of support workers. However, previous experience is not necessary, as we do offer full training for new colleagues.”
