The town said a sad farewell to Debenhams on Saturday when it closed its shutters for a final time.
It was a moment in history for the town after years of trading from the department store in The Drapery came to an end, leaving a huge gap in Northampton' s high street shopping.
Stepping back 50 years, the prominent shop used to be at the centre of the town's of hustle and bustle, when it still traded as the long-gone "Adnitts".
The Northampton store has been in Debenhams hands since 1952 when it bought from the Adnitt Brothers, who had been a feature on the Drapery dating back to the late-1870s.The Chronicle & Echo has dug through its archives and unearthed these snaps of Adnitts in its heyday such as when in 1965 shoppers queued around the block to get at its New Year's Day deals.
