Three Northampton off-licences are in trouble with the law after being caught in a sting operation over sales of alcohol to underage youngsters.
The Duston Safer Community Team carried out a test purchase operation at off-licences in Duston and St James after residents complained that alcohol-related youth nuisance was an issue for them.

During the blitz, three out of seven premises sold alcohol to a 16-year-old child.

Two of the shops were issued with £80 fixed penalty notices and one was reported for summons.

The sting was carried out with Northamptonshire County Council's trading standards department, and PC Victoria Howe, leading the operation, said: "The operation has been a success because it will make it harder for underage youths in that area to buy alcohol.

"But we do not want to be complacent so we will be carrying out further operations in the coming months.

"Selling alcohol to people who are underage is not acceptable and we will continue to work in conjunction with trading standards to stop these sales."

The other four shops refused to sell alcohol to the child.

I'll be the judge of 'Success' when you repeat this operation with a much larger number of shops and achieve a 'no-sale' rate in excess of 90%.

What makes you the judge of success?

Shelts. Yes. Apologies. I should have said that the PUBLIC will judge the success if at some future date further sting operations show only a minimal number of shops selling to under-age drinkers. at present 3 out of 7 seems totally unacceptable.
