Goals from open play are still hard to come by. The three we scored at Crewe were from a free kick, a penalty and a corner.
While at the other end we are not properly shutting the door – in our 13 games this season, Millwall are the only team not to have put put the ball in our net.

We are bossing midfield, and once we get shots on target and then cut out the silly errors at the back, there'll be no stopping us.

I hope this doesn't sound like nit-picking; even with things as they are we look strong and capable, but you can see that the potential for more is bubbling under, which is why I keep going on about us being play-off material.

Crewe only got 15 minutes of meaningful possession, we ran the show to the point that many of their supporters were heading off well before full time.

If you're a betting person it'll be worth seeing what odds you'll get on us sending Hartlepool back home tomorrow night with a good thrashing.

Much depends on Adebayo Akinfenwa dragging his injured shin on to the pitch and bagging a few goals before we sub him to save his ravaged body, and, assuming too that Karl Hawley plays and gets the breaks.

Once he and Leon Constantine start hitting the target we'll be up to full steam, either that or we're going to have to shell out in the next transfer window.

I doubt if Colin Larkin's hamstring injury will be risked against Hartlepool.

Those who do like a flutter on games will realise that a named score carries better odds, I had £3 on our 3-1 win at Crewe at 28-1, those odds will probably be lower tomorrow but it's not a bad one to go for.

I'm not yet confident enough in our ability to keep a clean sheet.

I'm always reluctant to criticise referees and I dislike the in-built hatred that so many fans seem to have for the man who is trying his best at a demanding and important job.

However I do feel that last Saturday's man, Andy Haines from Newcastle, deserves to be slated – if the label of being a 'home' was ever to stick, the title was his by a country mile.

Dozens of 50/50 decisions went against us, and on several occasions he either turned a blind eye to their serious offences or worse, manipulated events to save himself from making a decision.

He avoided dealing with a potential red-card offence by a Crewe player by blowing the half-time whistle immediately and striding off, then later, as we'd earned a stonewall penalty with him in a good position to see it, he tried to wave play on for at least 10 seconds until he was forced to stop by his linesman who stood his ground and signalled it when a more meek official would have left it alone.

Haines mercifully did give the foul against Abdul Osman which led to our first goal, a free kick which Danny Jackman planted perfectly, and then once we were eventually awarded that penalty, Akinfenwa cooly faced down the barracking home fans, put the ball on the spot and whopped it into the net before walking calmly over to their supporters to wait briefly without gesture or comment, then back to the centre-circle.
