A huge swarm of bees invaded a plant stall on Northampton's Market Square, sending terrified shoppers running for cover this afternoon.
The enormous collection of flying insects gathered on the corner of a bedding plant stall at about 1pm.

The swarm, three times the size of a football, caused panic among lunchtime shopppers who fled for cover to escape the ordeal.

Eyewitness Steve Riches, aged 60, of Flore, said: "There were thousands of them circling above the stall. It looked like a whirlpool.

"Then they picked a corner and settled there. Some people were running like hell to start with."

The swarm was still on the stall a couple of hours later, with shoppers and traders giving them a wide berth.
